It is wise to start orthodontic treatment only when it is necessary and feasible. Good timing is also important. Based on the collected data, the orthodontist will propose a treatment plan. The type of braces will vary from patient to patient. Monthly check-ups will take place after the braces are placed. Once the orthodontic treatment is completed, the patient visits the orthodontist a few times to assess whether the result achieved is stable.
Together, we’ll assess whether orthodontic treatment is necessary and feasible and if so, the best time to start. The right timing is crucial as it makes the difference between orthodontic treatments lasting six months to a maximum of four years or even up to six years.
If it turns out that treatment is necessary and feasible, an extensive assessment will be attempted immediately or a follow-up appointment will be made for this purpose. Facial and dental photos, X-rays and a scan of the teeth with the help of a camera. The costs for this assessment are around 300 Euro and include the orthodontist’s preparation of the orthodontic treatment plan and the discussion of the treatment plan a few weeks after the extensive assessment. It is wise to find out in advance what kind of insurance you have rates.
The best treatment plan will be conveyed during the discussion of the treatment plan (this can also be in the evening and/or by telephone).
Where appropriate, reasonable alternative treatment options will also be provided. It will be discussed what type of braces will be used, what the expected duration of treatment is, whether any (deciduous) teeth will need to be extracted (necessary in about 20% of orthodontic treatments to perform the orthodontic treatment safely). In addition, you will be given a cost estimate, which includes the expected costs for the entire orthodontic procedure (see below) and you will be informed of the potential risks or areas of concern associated with orthodontic treatment.
If you agree with the proposed treatment plan and the associated costs, the appointments for the placement of the braces will be made by the secretaries. After the braces have been placed, monthly check-ups will take place to ensure that the treatment is going as well and as smoothly as possible.
First appointment
During the first visit an assessment is made to decide whether braces are necessary and feasible. If the assessment indicates treatment is needed, then the right moment to start is determined.
Comprehensive assessment
Data is collected, including facial and dental photos, X-rays and impressions for dental models are made (‘bites’). The orthodontist uses this information to draw up a treatment plan.
Consultation
The proposed treatment plan will be discussed during the consultation (this can also take place in the evening or by telephone).
Placement of the braces
Based on the treatment plan, we will start with the placement of the braces. The type of braces varies from patient to patient.
Check-ups
Monthly check-ups to ensure that the treatment is proceeding as smoothly and successfully as possible.
Removal of braces
Once the orthodontic treatment is completed, the braces will be removed and retainers will usually be placed behind the upper and lower front teeth.
Retention checks
In the year after the orthodontic treatment is completed, you will visit Utrecht a few more times to assess whether the result achieved is stable. The dentist takes over the check-ups at the six-monthly dental check-ups. In the event of problems in this phase, the patient is welcome to visit both us and the dentist.
